About Ricardo

Ricardo Rangel grew up in a military family. His father, Mr. Rangel Sr., served in the United States Army for 22 years, retiring from active duty as a Master Sergeant and his mother is a small business owner. Ricardo was born in New York City, but the family moved frequently as his father served at different posts around the country. After graduating from high school in Pemberton, NJ, Ricardo continued his family’s tradition of military service, and enlisted in the U.S. Army.  Ricardo served for 12 years, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 2010.

After the Army, Ricardo continued his focus on public service, while also completing his education.   He has been involved in community events benefitting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Florida and continued activism and leadership in the community earned him the Emerging Leadership Award from the NAACP and the National Leadership Award from the Business Council, while his political activism earned him the recognition of Young Democrat of the Year from the Florida Democratic Party. Ricardo became the first member of his family to earn a college degree, receiving both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Management from Warner University.

With the desire to help working families, Ricardo decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives. In 2012, Ricardo was elected with 68% of the vote. Within a few months of being in office he led the charge to protect working-class families, by saving the state pension, voting against school vouchers, voting to give state workers a raise, and co-sponsoring a bill to raise Florida’s minimum wage. He also earned the respect of the business community by showing  that he is business friendly and eager to work across party lines for effective economic development to help create jobs.
